Thanks to R.O.G. for sponsoring this video! Check out their latest SCAR series laptops to create and game on the go! https://rog.gg/PwnisherScar In this beginner friendly course, I'm using Touch Designer to build real-time, audio-reactive visual art that you can perform with button clicks, MIDI controllers, or game controllers. At the end of the video, we'll perform our visuals to music in a MegaMan-inspired jam sesh. I stumbled on Touch Designer while playing music (as a means of escaping visual art), and ultimately found myself using the program to create visuals for Dedeco's Tekken Mix (linked below) DOWNLOAD TOUCH DESIGNER FOR FREE https://derivative.ca/download CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro 00:36 Why Touch Designer? 01:43 Navigating Touch Designer 03:50 Build a Basic Render Network 08:39 Cloning & Colors (Instancing) 12:45 R.O.G Strix Scar Laptop Specs 13:59 Adding Swell (LFO CHOP) 16:52 Adding a Flip (KeyboardIn CHOP) 18:41 Adding a Pulse (Noise SOP) 22:23 Adding Shift 26:54 Background Colors (Switch TOP) 29:38 Wireframe Boxes 31:45 Camera Moves 33:44 Make it Float 37:21 Optical FX (Noise, Interlace, DeRes) 40:12 Connecting to MIDI 44:02 Let's Play Music PYTHON CODES: me.parent().width | me.parent().height - Sets value to project resolution absTime.seconds | absTime.frame - Sets value to project timecode. len(ops('YourOpNameHere*')) - Counts the number of ops named YourOpNameHere len(ops('A/B*')) - Counts all the ops that start with B in a base named A. op('YourOpNameHere').text - Displays the text in a DAT named YourOpNameHere. a if op('YourOpNameHere').par.index == b else c - Only changes a value if YourOpNameHere is a certain value, else it'll be another value. WHEN LEARNING A NEW PROGRAM: Have a goal: Or a small project, to give your learning journey purpose. For me it was the Tekken video w/ Dedeco. A game series I loved, with a YouTuber I highly respected. This, and my interest in music was the sole driving force behind me learning this program. Learn with a community: I gathered my friends (via Discord) who knew touch designer, and who wanted to learn it, and had a video chat with everyone. The ppl who knew TD gave us a demo, and the ppl who were learning asked questions, shared why they're learning TD, and what their goals were. We were able to share all of progress (big and small) and get positive feedback that pushed us forward on our creative journey. Get situated in the new program: You have to know where the buttons are, and how to navigtate it. So follow a beginners course. This was the first thing i watched when deciding to learn TD: • TouchDesigner Tutorial: Beginner Crash Course Do your reps: Watch and follow along with LOTS of tutorials. This builds your knowledge base. I just tore through this playlist before making anything for the Tekken project. I wanted to get to the point where I could have an idea, and know how to execute it in TD. I only got to that point by doing my reps. Take notes: I did so much of this. I wrote down questions (that I would ultimately ask on the TD Discord server.), I wrote down shortcuts, Python codes, anything I knew I needed to remember I wrote down. I wrote down ideas for visuals I knew I wanted to make, before I knew how to make them. Cause eventually I watched enough tuts to get me to the point where I can make just about everything I set out to do.
