If any animal deserves to be called a “legendary monster,” it’s the great white shark. To capture it up close, the film crew takes a boat out to Dyer Island in the Indian Ocean, off the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. They succeed in filming great white sharks at close range. Sharks are seen biting into a chunk of meat tied to a rope, and thrashing around with their whole body to tear it away. But is there more to these creatures than mindless ferocity? Working with a group of researchers who are identifying and studying individual great white sharks, the film crew offers an insight into their unique ecology. In A Fateful Battle, the sequel to this episode, a great white shark attacks a fur seal, tossing it into the air.
