These six-digit codes, called a subheading, are used by customs authorities around the world to identify products for duties and taxes. They form the foundation for most export classification systems, like the HTS and Schedule B. Why Use HS Codes? Standardized: HS codes ensure smoother trade. Instead of learning every country's customs codes, exporters primarily need to understand the HS system. Universally Used: Include the HS code on any export documents used by both you and the importer, like proforma and commercial invoices and certificates of origin. Understanding Schedule B Codes Schedule B codes are the U.S.-specific system, managed by the U.S. Census Bureau to monitor U.S. exports. They share the first six digits of HS codes, but add four more for a total of 10. This extra detail helps further classify products for U.S. export tracking. When to Use Schedule B Codes? —Focus on Schedule B: As an exporter, you'll likely use Schedule B codes more than HS codes. —U.S. Exports Only: Schedule B codes are exclusive to the United States and for exports only. They may differ from the 10-digit Harmonized Tariff Schedule, or HTS codes used for U.S. imports. —Include on U.S. Filings: You'll need the 10-digit Schedule B code on documents or filings used for the U.S. export process. This includes your Electronic Export Information, or EEI, submitted to AESDirect, or on your Shipper's Letter of Instruction for your freight forwarder. Key Points to Remember —There are 10 digits in a Schedule B code compared to 6 for HS codes. —Schedule B codes are for U.S. exports only. —The Schedule B code for a product may differ from the HTS code used for imports.
