On the last day of our visit to the Isle of Skye, I woke up early to check out something that I was too curious about not to. Spar Cave is located in Glasnakille and is only accessible on foot for an hour on either side of low tide. With the low tide time lining up perfectly the next morning, I left at 5 AM and headed forty minutes south to check things out. The history of the cave dates back to the 9th century, where it is believed that a local princess fell in love with the son of the chief of Colonsay. She gave birth to his baby, and the princess hid with the baby in the cave until the feud was over, thereby avoiding her father's discovery. The Gaelic name for the cave is Slochd Altimen, meaning Nursing Cave. Getting to the cave was no easy task. Finding the location was difficult, as there were no signs of any kind to show the way. I found a place to pull over and saw a gate with a path after walking for a couple of minutes. In around ten minutes, I had made it down to the water's edge. After passing three caves that looked promising, the fourth was the one. I wasn't as prepared as I should have been, but still went about as far as I wanted, with a level of darkness I've never seen. Here is a look at Spar Cave.
