This iron has often been described as a hidden gem in the golfing world. Priced competitively and boasting impressive performance metrics, the ZXI7 has caught the attention of many golfers over the past 18 to 24 months. The craftsmanship from Stricker is evident, as they consistently produce quality irons, wedges, and woods. The ZXI7 stands out not just for its aesthetics but also for its performance. It offers a solid ball flight and is considerably cheaper than many competitors in the forged iron category. This affordability, combined with its performance, makes it a tough contender in any head-to-head comparison. Introducing the Mizuno Pro S3 Next up is the Mizuno Pro S3 iron. Positioned between the hot metal and MP ranges, the S3 aims to appeal to golfers who appreciate a more traditional look and feel. With standard lofts set at 34°, and a design reminiscent of classic models like the MP32 and MP60, this iron is all about control and precision. While the S3 is a new addition to the Mizuno lineup, it’s worth noting that it comes with a higher price tag, reflecting its premium craftsmanship. The finish is a lovely satin style that not only looks fantastic but also enhances the overall feel during play. Performance Comparison: Numbers on the Bay Now that we have a good understanding of both irons, let’s take them to the bay and see how they perform. Starting with the Mizuno Pro S3, one of the first observations is its striking appearance. It definitely has that retro vibe which many golfers adore. However, when it comes to forgiveness, the S3 is less forgiving than its competitors. During testing, I found that even with a decent strike, the ball speed did not soar beyond 106 mph. For a golfer with a swing speed around 90 mph, the results were somewhat disappointing. The carry distance hovered around 150 yards, which may not meet the expectations for those looking for distance. In contrast, the ZXI7 showed a significant improvement in ball speed, reaching up to 117 mph with a carry distance of around 170 yards. This 20-yard difference could be crucial for many golfers, especially those seeking more distance in their game. Forgiveness and Feel When it comes to feel, the ZXI7 excels. It provides a softer touch, making it easier to hit consistently. Although the Mizuno S3 has a beautiful aesthetic and a classic appeal, its lack of forgiveness can be a deal-breaker for many. If you’re an aging golfer or someone who may not have the same swing speed as before, the ZXI7 might be the better choice. The S3 is designed for those who can really step into their shots, but if you’re not swinging at high speeds, you may find yourself struggling to get the performance you desire. The ZXI7, however, is more accommodating, making it easier to achieve a good strike and get the ball airborne. Design Aesthetics Both irons have their design merits. The Mizuno Pro S3 features a retro style that many purists will appreciate. The finish is undeniably attractive, and the traditional look can inspire confidence at address. However, the ZXI7 offers a slightly chunkier profile which can be more forgiving for the average golfer. When comparing the two side by side, the S3 has a thinner top line which may appeal to better players, while the ZXI7's thicker top line can provide a sense of security for those who may struggle with consistency.
