FSA fighters in smoke and dust covered street in aftermath of blast STORYLINE: In the battle for control of Syria's largest city, rebel fighters are using whatever they can as a weapon to wage war on the regime. In the old quarter of Aleppo, AP Television followed a small team of Free Syrian Army (FSA) bomb makers as they attempted a hit and run attack on enemy snipers who hold back the rebels' advance. Operating in a district that is hit daily by mortars, sniper fire and airstrikes the fighters carted improvised explosives made from gas cylinders through battle scarred streets and alleys. Their target is a building located close to government forces which government snipers are located. Once inside, the heavily armed rebels plant the crude bombs before retreating a safe distance to set off the blast remotely. Smoke filled the nearby streets in the aftermath of the blast but it was not known how much damage had been caused. Since the rebels launched their assault in July to drive government forces from Aleppo, the two sides have fought to a stalemate. Each holds about half the city of 3 million people and neither is able to deal the other a decisive blow. The uprising against Assad's regime began as mostly peaceful protests in March last year but quickly morphed into a civil war. Activists estimate the conflict has killed more than 36-thousand people.
