Celebrating Oscar Peterson’s Night Train — 50 Years Later In 2013, we gathered at Victoria Hall in Westmount to honour Night Train, one of Oscar Peterson’s most cherished recordings, marking fifty years since its release in 1963. Presented by CBC Music, the evening unfolded before a sold-out hall and felt less like a commemorative concert and more like a deeply personal tribute — a shared moment of gratitude for music that has stayed with us across generations. Produced for CBC Television by Frank Opolko, the celebration brought the spirit of Night Train vividly back to life. Rooted in the blues, enriched by timeless standards, and carried by Oscar’s unmistakable touch, the music resonated with the same warmth, swing, and joy that made the album enduring in the first place. Set against the backdrop of Montreal’s rich jazz heritage, the night served as a reminder that Oscar Peterson’s legacy is not only woven into the history of jazz, but into the cultural heartbeat of the city itself.
