I really want to visit a couple of Sámi museums and learn more about the Sámi, a people who have always fascinated and interested me. …and of course I’ll see if I can find a genuine, handmade Sámi knife. The Sámi are the Indigenous people of Sápmi, a region that stretches across northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Their history spans thousands of years, with strong traditions connected to nature, reindeer herding, fishing, and handicrafts known as duodji. Sámi culture is rich in music, especially the traditional singing style called joik, as well as distinct languages, clothing, and spiritual beliefs. Despite a history of discrimination and assimilation, Sámi culture remains vibrant and continues to be an important part of the Nordic region today. The Sámi Parliament building in Karasjok was opened in 2000. Its architecture is inspired by traditional Sámi forms and symbols, especially the lavvu, a traditional Sámi tent.
