After the disappointing bronze medal in Seoul in 1988 and FIBA's decision to allow professional players in 1989, the USA put together a team of NBA superstars. This included legends such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen. The only college player selected was Christian Laettner, while Shaquille O'Neal was not considered despite his outstanding achievements in college. Under the direction of coach Chuck Daly, the team dominated the tournament, winning all eight games by an average margin of 44 points. In the final, they defeated Croatia 117:85 to win the gold medal.
