Twelve years ago, Richard Gray was channelling his VCA film school education into the coming-of-age drama Summer Coda, on location in the Victorian heartland township of Mildura. Nowadays, the expat director has forged a U.S. career that has led him to the wilds of Montana, where he has built a vast production base that played host to his latest film, the genre-bending western/murder mystery, MURDER AT YELLOWSTONE CITY. The gorgeously-mounted, progressively-minded project is unlike any 'ol' school oater' you might've seen, with gunslinging genre tropes playing alongside an African-American lead, same-sex relationships and indigenous culture, all integral to the plot complexities. From his Montana home (actually, from his car, parked near his Montana home), Richard Gray took a break from his family's July 4th celebrations to talk to SCREEN WATCHING's Simon Foster about updating classic Western mythology, working with screen legends Gabriel Byrne and Richard Dreyfuss, and the ambitions he has for his flyover state production base. MURDER AT YELLOWSTONE CITY is currently in theatres and on-demand in the U.S.; it premieres July 6 on Australian streaming platforms via @defiantscreenentertainment8732. #Western #Montana #GabrielByrne #StreamingNow
