Hi Guys, My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today we are talking about Lipomas or fatty tumors in the dog. A lipoma can develop almost anywhere on the dog, but they are most common just under the skin in the subcutaneous space. A lipoma is a benign growth or tumor of fat cells that just grows at one spot. Lipomas usually feel like a soft squishy ball right under the skin. Lipomas are usually very movable under the skin too. A lipoma in most cases does not cause pain and discomfort. Any growth on a dog should always be tested. A test can either be a fine needle aspirate or biopsy. Lipomas are usually diagnosed with a fine needle aspirate. The fine needle aspirate is very quick and less invasive than a biopsy; however, a biopsy should always be completed if there is any question that the lipoma may be some other kind of tumor or growth. As dogs get older, lipomas are very common. Most veterinary clinics can diagnose a lipoma in house during your vaccine or wellness exam. Always let your veterinarian know if there are any lumps or bumps you would like tested. Disclaimer: This video does not replace veterinary care. This video is only for entertainment and education.
