LAKE COUNTY, MICHIGAN is heart of Manistee National Forest which was ultimately created as an integral part of the HURON- MANISTEE NATIONAL FOREST. It was denuded by the lumbar barons who among other places built Chicago twice and utilized the lumber whose growth was primordial White Pine in other ways. The Civilian Conservation Corps "boys" replanted the area which was left with 70 feet of sandy loam. They also built bridges, roads and stabilized the area which is now strictly controlled by the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Among those prized resources is the Pere Marquette River, a wild river from which trout and salmon are harvested. My father served as a Medical Officer in the C.C.C. ultimately becoming a Major, M.C., Regimental Surgeon, 366th Infantry. He resigned his Commission after 11 years. My mother restored historic property, helped through utilizing her skills both in business and medicine to significantly improve the lives of others. As their daughter with training in Public Health, Pediatrics we worked together as a team to try to restore the health and well-being of the community which has unparallelled natural beauty.
