Allegro Andante – 8:10 Scherzo: Allegro vivace – 15:40 Rondo: Allegro ma non troppo – 18:13 Although it was not named as such by Beethoven, it is understandable why it was given the name 'The Pastoral Sonata.' In fact, there are many common features with the Pastoral Symphony, which was written seven years later by the composer. Already in the first movement, the recurring bass tones in the left hand throughout the exposition of the first theme give the melodic line in the right hand a texture reminiscent of a bagpipe orchestra (associated with the rural – pastoral – side). The second movement contrasts with the first, being in the opposite minor key. Here too, the bass dictates the character of the movement and can be likened, in orchestral terms, to the cello section setting a march rhythm. In the middle of the movement, when the key of the first movement returns, the bird sounds played in the upper register clarify why the sonata received its name. The pastoral scene meets us once again in the fourth movement, where the bass line imitates the 'drone and roll' – a sort of rustic musical instrument that also produces a sound similar to that of bagpipes Rafi Eshel Studios (13/5/25)
