Curt Bruns (1915-1945) was a Wehrmacht captain who became the first Nazi war criminal executed by United States forces during World War II. Born in Juist, Germany, Bruns worked as a grocery clerk before joining Hitler's army in 1936, rising to the rank of Hauptmann by 1943. During the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, he ordered the execution of two captured American soldiers—Staff Sergeant Kurt Jacobs and Technician Murray Zappler—after discovering they were German-born Jews. Declaring "The Jews have no right to live in Germany," Bruns had them shot in the back by firing squad. Captured in February 1945, he was convicted of war crimes in a one-day trial and executed by firing squad on June 15, 1945, at a gravel quarry in Denstorf, Germany. He was just 30 years old and one of only two Nazi war criminals executed by American firing squad rather than hanging.
