Step back in time as we explore Baku’s Old City, a treasure trove of history and culture. The Old City of Baku, also known as İçəri Şəhər, is a historical gem at the heart of Azerbaijan’s capital. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and is surrounded by an impressive fortress wall, parts of which date back to the 12th century. The Old City was once the center of the medieval Shirvanshah state. Notably, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs from the 15th century is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. The famous Maiden Tower (Qız Qalası), whose origins may date back to the 6th–7th century BC, is a symbol of Baku. The winding streets and historic houses reflect the rich history, influenced by Arabic, Persian, and Russian cultures. The Old City houses numerous mosques, caravanserais, and baths, which shape the image of a mature Muslim city of the Middle Ages. Despite modern interventions, it remains a vibrant open-air museum with unique architectural heritage. Walk with me through the narrow streets and experience the atmosphere of bygone eras.
