First Look with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the World’s Largest Camera Abstract: The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which features the world’s largest digital Camera, will observe billions of galaxies, billions of stars in our own galaxy the Milky Way, as well as millions of objects closer to home in the solar system. Every night over a ten year survey, the Rubin Observatory will observe much of the night sky, so that every portion of the sky will be imaged nearly a thousand times. Rubin has just released its first images, with thousands of asteroids and millions of stars and galaxies. In this talk I will describe the capabilities of this new observatory, some of the early results from the initial images and its future discovery potential. About the speaker: Aaron Roodman is a professor of Particle Physics & Astrophysics at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, specializing in observational cosmology. Trained in experimental particle physics, he spent two decades studying differences between Matter and antiMatter, before turning his research to astrophysics and cosmology. Roodman’s current research focuses on the study of Dark Energy using images from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. He has played a major role in the construction of the LSST Camera, the world’s largest digital camera, and is currently the leader of the LSST Camera program and Deputy Director of the Rubin Observatory for construction.
