This time I'm visiting Karabash - a town located in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia which is notorious for being one of the most polluted cities in the world. Founded in 1822, Karabash became an industrial hub in the late 19th century with the establishment of copper smelting operations. The smelters, operating with little regard for environmental standards, released vast quantities of sulfur dioxide and heavy metals into the atmosphere, causing severe ecological damage. By the late 20th century, the landscape around Karabash had turned into a desolate wasteland, with barren, blackened hills and poisoned rivers. Despite efforts to modernize the smelting processes and reduce pollution, Karabash's environment remains severely impacted. Filmed in April 2022. Enjoy!
