The name, which dates back to the 14th century, is derived from the German word Zeile "row" and originally referred to a row of houses on the eastern end of the north side; the name was not extended to the entire street until later. Die Zeil ist eine Straße in der nördlichen Innenstadt von Frankfurt am Main. Seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gilt sie als eine der bekanntesten und umsatzstärksten Einkaufsstraßen in Deutschland. Zuvor war sie vor allem für ihre prächtigen Gasthöfe und Palais aus der Zeit des Barock und Klassizismus berühmt. Der westliche, rund 500 Meter lange Teil der Straße ist seit den 1970er Jahren eine Fußgängerzone. Im Westen, wo am Platz An der Hauptwache die Katharinenpforte abzweigt, beginnt der Roßmarkt, im Osten ist der Platz Konstablerwache noch Teil der Fußgängerzone.
