As a medical student at Zydus Medical College, I had the incredible opportunity to go behind the scenes at Zydus Hospital, Dahod, to understand a critical, yet often unseen, aspect of healthcare: biomedical waste management. The hospital adheres to the strict guidelines of the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 (and its amendments), demonstrating a strong commitment to both patient and environmental safety. You will see the process of proper segregation at the source using the standardized color-coded bins: Yellow Bins: For human anatomical waste, soiled materials like dressings and cotton, and chemical waste. Red Bins: For all recyclable contaminated waste, such as tubing, bottles, IV sets, and catheters. White (Translucent) Bins: For sharp objects like needles, scalpels, and blades, which are disposed of in puncture-proof containers. Blue Bins: For glass bottles and cytotoxic waste.
