South Australian town looks to shed 'meth capital of Australia' title

The Australian’s David Penberthy has warned against taking the title "meth capital of Australia" for a single town too seriously, saying the label has been applicable to multiple towns across the nation over recent years. South Australian town Murray Bridge was given the title three years ago, prompting police to launch an investigation into local drug use, which involved raiding over 100 homes in 2018. Mr Penberthy said, however, at least a dozen towns across Australia had qualified for that title over different years. “The extent to which the term ‘meth capital of Australia’ gets bandied about has about as much meaning as the signs you see in pretty much every country town saying ‘Australia’s best pie’,” he told Sky News. “These headlines come and go and I think that the sad thing is you almost see like a type of FIFO journalism where people rock in, declare that a place is a hell hole then move on again.”
