Tube Pre Amp Test - Guitar - ART Digital MPA ii vs UA 4-710D

We ran a test comparing two tube pre amps, the ART Digital MPA ii and the Universal Audio 4-710D. We connected both via ADAT to the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and then into Logic Pro X. We also used the Saffire Pro 40 as a third pre as a point of comparison. This video shows the guitar tests. We used three set ups to compare different tube effects on different line ups. For each set up Louis played the same piece three times, going through a different pre each time. 0:00 Set up 1 - 12 String Guitar Mid-Side Mic - Mid - Neumann U47fet Mic - Side - Coles 4038 Guitar - Washburn 12 string guitar 01:12 Set Up 2 - Acoustic Guitar - Mono Mic Mic - Coles 4038 Guitar - JWC selmer replica guitar 02:26 Set Up 3 - Electric Guitar Cab Mics - Coles 4038 and Shure SM57 Guitar - Ibanez Artcore guitar Amp - Fulltone fulldrive 2 mosfet pedal into Epiphone Electar amp We simply tried to get the best sound from each pre so the settings are different. This is because Sound On Sound already ran an exhaustive test showing that when ran clean all tubes sound very much the same. https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/.... This test was to see how a tube pre can enhance the chain. In Logic we did minimal processing. An equal amount of reverb from Space Designer. For the Mid Side we obviously had to copy the Side signal, invert the phase and pan left/right. For the cab tests we panned the left and right mic +/- 20 to give some separation between the mics and give a stereo image. In a previous piano mic test we ran (   • Grand Piano Mic Shootout - L-R pair -...  ) we worked hard to get the RMS the same. However whilst this really helped to show how small the differences are once you remove the 'louder is better' element, it took a lot of time to achieve (far longer on some mics) and in a studio environment we're more interested in how good a piece of kit can make a source sound as quickly as possible. This is important for the engineer but also for the artist, both in making efficient use of studio time and also getting a great sound for tracking to support the performance. Plug ins and lots of work in the box can make most things sound great, but we're more interested in getting to the sound we're looking for quickly and easily, and the right mic / pre combination can make this possible. What did we think from the results? The ART is an awesome piece of kit and great value, lots of parameters to adjust and a great sound. We ended up keeping the UA, but this was more to do with having 4 channels in one two-rack unit, also the fact there are less parameters means we're less likely to get bogged down in settings (or get it wrong). The UA also comes with the compressor which we had on in the test to hear its impact on the sound. In hindsight that was not always the best setting and I think the electric cab would have sounded much bigger without it and been more on par with the ART sound. What do we think of tube pres now? Personally I agree that tubes don't warm up a sound, for that ribbon mics are a much better piece of kit. But the tube pres definitely give more presence to a signal which can help certain elements stand out in a mix. Also, they really enhanced the sound of the condenser mics. Hopefully we'll get around to publishing the vocal mic results from this test, where the tubes made the Neumann TLM102 and U47fet sound amazing. Huge thanks as always to guitarist Louis Thorne for playing for us and PMT Cambridge for helping source the kit. More at www.repmusic.co.uk/recording-studio
