In this video, I head out on a scouting mission to explore a hard-to-access, cat-paw-shaped spur that looks promising on the map as a potential deer bedding area. My goal is to find spots most hunters avoid by navigating steep hills, ridgelines, creek bottoms, and logging roads while reading deer sign along the way. I come across plenty of rubs, scrapes, trails, and even old tree stand remnants, which confirm long-term deer use—but also reveal recent human pressure in some areas. Along the journey, I break down terrain features, access routes, thermals, and why deer choose certain travel corridors over others. As I finally reach the spur and surrounding valley, it becomes clear that while the area holds deer, much of it functions as thick, secure bedding with heavy deadfall—making it difficult to hunt without pushing deer out. I walk through realistic hunting approaches, potential setups, and wind considerations, ultimately concluding that this spot is low-probability but still educational. Even though the hunt potential didn’t fully match the expectations, the scouting trip provides valuable insight into deer behavior, terrain strategy, and how map theory plays out in the real world. Sometimes scouting ends with a home run, sometimes with a “meh”—and this one was all about learning.
