In this second video in my caregiver series, I share what I’ve learned while supporting my mother through the early stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Diagnosis can take years. The paperwork is overwhelming. Systems don’t always adapt quickly. And as executive function changes, family members often become advocates, administrators, and emotional anchors all at once. But the most important lesson I’ve learned is this: patience. Patience with yourself. Patience with your loved one. And grace for the mistakes you will inevitably make. Dementia caregiving is not just about aging. It is about personality shifts, behavioral changes, and living through a daily cycle of grief while your parent is still physically present. In this video, I talk about: • Delayed diagnosis and medical system challenges • The emotional reality of being an only child caregiver • The grief that few people talk about • Becoming the keeper of shared memories • Why present-moment connection becomes everything I am a biologist, researcher, and journalist, and I will be sharing two videos per week discussing both the science and the lived experience of dementia caregiving. If you are walking this road, you are not alone. Please share your experiences in the comments.
