Paul Byrne has spent decades obsessed with a single idea: words shape our world. In his TEDx Talk, he reveals his lifelong fascination with “ION” words, those small linguistic sparks like inspiration, imagination, and innovation that can lift conversations, energise thinking, and deepen human connection. To Paul, these words aren’t just vocabulary; they’re fuel. Positive IONs create clarity, clarity strengthens communication, and communication builds meaningful relationships. He’s equally aware of the opposite force. Negative IONs - procrastination, frustration, destruction, drain energy and shut down collaboration. Paul urges us to choose our words with intention, because the energy we speak is the energy we live. His message is grounded in four simple practices: expand your bank of positive IONs, pay attention to how your words land, listen to how others respond, and notice how language makes you feel. These habits, he argues, can transform how we progress through the world. Paul threads these ideas through the story of his own life: a 59-year journey from a boy fishing in Kerry, Ireland to a corporate banker, shaped by a near-death experience, to a poet and finally back home again to Kerry, Ireland - this time with a creative fire he calls his “Imagineering years.” Through every chapter, his three pillars - Inspiration, Imagination, Innovation - guided him forward. Paul leaves us with a challenge: back yourself, choose positive IONs, and know the words that spark your inspiration, imagination, and innovation. Paul Byrne was born in Sligo and grew up in Listowel, Kerry. He moved to Naas and Dublin for 40 years where he pursued his professional career in Corporate Banking for 25 years. In 2010 he transitioned to Business Development in the private sector and also ran his own business PWB, from 2020-2024. The “Banker turned Bard” started writing poetry in 2007 and has published two books the most recent of which is “FOR THE LOVE OF KERRY” in March 2025, having moved back to rural living in the Kingdom’s stunning Killarney in 2022. Paul is now fully immersed in the Arts scene and volunteering. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
