In this session we dive into one of the biggest challenges many businesses are facing right now – warehouse capacity and productivity. If you’ve been running out of space, struggling with rising costs, or finding service levels slipping because of a cluttered warehouse, you’re not alone. Over the last couple of years, it’s become harder than ever to rent or secure extra warehouse space, which makes it even more important to get the most out of the capacity you already have. That’s exactly what this 20-minute webinar is all about. No fluff, no drawn-out theory – just practical warehouse management tips you can take away and put into practice straight away. We start by looking at the real cost of doing nothing. If capacity issues aren’t tackled, costs climb fast – whether it’s from off-site storage, extra handling, or labour inefficiencies. Service drops as staff can’t get to products quickly, mistakes increase, and customer satisfaction takes a hit. But when you make smart changes, the results can be impressive: 15–20% gains in capacity, 4–7% improvement in labour efficiency, and 5–8% better service levels are very achievable. I then take you through the symptoms of a warehouse that’s too full – aisles clogged with pallets, containers waiting to be unloaded, rising labour costs, and that dreaded need to hire expensive external storage. We dig into the common causes too, such as excess, slow-moving, or obsolete stock (what I call SLOBEX), poor forecasting, supplier purchasing policies that create lumpy flows, and failing to plan properly for future growth. From there we get into the solutions – both quick wins and longer-term strategies. Short-term fixes include: Slotting – rearranging your fastest-moving stock to be closer to dispatch areas. Done well, this can lift productivity by 15% or more. Aisle widths and equipment choice – swapping to articulated forklifts and narrowing aisles can boost warehouse capacity by as much as 30%. Inventory reduction – clearing SLOBEX stock frees up space and reduces costs dramatically. On the longer-term side, it’s about maximising the cube. That means using both footprint and height effectively, introducing mezzanine floors where possible, and considering high-density storage solutions such as vertical lift machines or shuttle racking. Hybrid warehouse designs, combining automation with traditional racking and picking, are also proving very effective in larger operations. I also touch on labour efficiency, with some insights into where 60% of warehouse labour costs are typically tied up – namely receiving, put-away, picking, and packing. If you can streamline those areas, you’ll make big gains not only in cost but also in throughput and service reliability. The key takeaway is this: before you commit to expensive off-site storage or moving to a new facility, make sure you’ve fully optimised the warehouse you already have. By addressing stock management, layout, equipment, and flow, you could unlock significant extra capacity and productivity without the huge cost of expansion. Thanks for joining the session. I hope you come away with a list of practical things to check in your own warehouse.
