Understanding that trees have their own intelligence and ways in which they have evolved to compete for sunlight in a competitive setting is very helpful when it comes to understanding subordination pruning. When a tree has co-dominant stems, reducing the height of one side will often significantly stunt the growth of the subordinated side, as the tree will put the majority of its growth into the highest tops. This can be used together with or in many cases, in place of cabling. Generally subirdination pruning is best done on young and in this case a medium tree. I have been surprised over the years to see how little reduction is needed to stunt the growth of one side. In this case, I took a lot more off than would have been needed to develop apical dominance. So please realize that you don't need to hit a tree this hard to subordinate it. This is actually taking far more off the top than I have ever needed on other trees. The reason I hit this so hard was to allow more light on the formal landscape plantings below, which were being shaded by both the maple I pruned as well as a row of spruce trees.
