Between 1941 and 1944 over fourteen thousand Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmwagen cars were built, making it the most massed produced amphibious car in history. Only around 160 of those vehicles have survived. In the water a screw propeller attached to the rear engine cover could be lowered and this was driven by a direct extension from the engines crankshaft. This meant that the screw only worked in a forward motion, and if the car had to be reversed in the water either a paddle needed to be used, or the four wheel drive could be engaged in reverse allowing the wheel rotation to slowly take the vehicle backwards. The two front wheels doubled as the rudder so directional control was maintained with the the steering wheel both on land, and in the water. Capable of both 2 and 4 wheel drive, the Schwimmwagen could reach top speeds of up to 80km/h on land and 10km/h in water. -- http://www.aviationfilm.com Copyright © 2013 Historical Aviation Film Unit This video material may not be reproduced in any form (except as an embedded video on any other website), without the written permission of the Historical Aviation Film Unit.
