*Tokenization* is like replacing your real, valuable diamond with a pebble (the token). If you want to see or use your diamond again, you have to go back to a special box where you know which pebble represents which diamond. Each pebble by itself doesn't tell you anything about the diamond it replaces. *Encryption* is like putting your diamond in a magic box that changes its appearance. Only someone with a special key can open this box and see the diamond in its original form. Without the key, the diamond just looks like a piece of glass. In both cases, the goal is to keep the diamond safe. With tokenization, you're keeping the diamond in a secret location and using a pebble as a stand-in. With encryption, you're changing the diamond's appearance to hide its value, but with the right key, you can reveal its true form again.
