The first real life Mel’s Drive-In was founded by Mel Weiss and Harold Dobbs and opened in San Francisco on December 23rd 1947. It grew to have 11 locations. That’s the real life beginning of Mel’s Drive-In but do you know the movie that it first appeared in? If you answered, American Graffiti, you would be…wrong! We’ll get to American Graffiti in a bit but Mel’s Drive-In’s first movie appearance was in 1967 for the movie, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Portia and Kathrine Hepburn. In 1972, twenty-five years after the Mel’s Drive-Ins were first opened, they were sold. Right about that time, a young film maker named George Lucus began filming a movie for Universal Studios, that would become a hit. This movie, American Graffiti, needed a drive-in restaurant as setting. When George Lucus wrote the script, the movie was going to be set at a fictional drive-in, but when filming began, despite the sale of the Mel’s Drive-ins, the Mel’s signage was still up. Lucus decided not to remove but to keep the Mel’s Drive-In sign up and movie history was made. American Graffiti went on to become the third highest grossing movie of 1973. It was the success of American Graffiti that allowed Lucus to create a little passion project of his, maybe you’ve heard of it…a little movie called “Star Wars”. Who knows, if American Graffiti had failed, maybe no Star Wars. Now back to the real life Mel’s Drive-in… In the late 1980’s Mel’s had resurgence, a bit of a comeback, and it this is around the time that Universal began attempting to acquire the rights to use Mel’s in their theme parks. Eventually, Universal did acquire the rights to use Mel’s Drive-ins which of course created a great tie in between their classic American Graffiti movie and their theme parks. The inside of Universal’s Mel’s Drive-in has a classic roadside diners feel to it. There is a seating section to it that is dedicated to the American Graffiti. Can see the movie title here, using the same font as the movie…and there are actually pictures here from the movie. Don’t miss out, click that subscribe button or this link: https://goo.gl/IGmfD7
