Investigating the Role of Lithology and Diagenesis on Rock Magnetic Properties of Diagenetically Altered Marine Sediments: Pilot Study The video is also available for download at: https://earthref.org/ERDA/2764/ and can be referenced with the doi: 10.7288/V4/ERDA/2764 Title: Investigating the Role of Lithology and Diagenesis on Rock Magnetic Properties of Diagenetically Altered Marine Sediments: Pilot Study Author: Myriam Kars from the University of Plymouth, UK The rock magnetic properties of sediments depend on many factors, including the provenance of the sediment and the depositional environment. After deposition, sediments undergo diagenesis, primarily through a variety of biogeochemical processes which alter magnetic mineral assemblages. Pairing lithologic information from the LILY Database (Childress et al. 2024, Geochem. Geophy. Geosy.) with rock magnetic parameters (e.g., hysteresis properties) in diagenetically altered marine sediments from three Pacific Ocean subduction zones we investigate relationships between lithology and diagenetic alteration of the magnetic mineral assemblages. In this pilot study, we focus on clay-rich lithologies with variable amounts of volcanoclastic particles. Preliminary observations on sediment samples from IODP Expeditions 334 (Costa Rica Margin), 350 (Izu Bonin Mariana Rear Arc), and 375 (Hikurangi Subduction Margin) show that the index DJH and remanent coercivity Bcr could be good proxies of diagenetically altered interval. Our preliminary results indicate that post-depositional processes affect the magnetic properties of the sediment, with diagenesis being variable across each lithology. ----------------------------------------------------------- 00:00 - Intro 00:23 - Presentation 25:40 - Questions 41:35 - Announcements
