Woodland Autumn Walk - As we are in the midst of winter, I thought I'd share this video from early autumn - September 2025, featuring early autumn and fall colours as we walk through a carpet of oak and beech leaves. We walk through lovely woodland on this relaxing verdant walk through the beech trees of Croham Hurst, in south London, with verdant leaves from oak, beech, Silver Birch and Holly bushes. It’s designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation due to its unique mix of geology, flora, and history. The hill itself rises to around 477 feet and is layered with chalk, Thanet Sands, and a cap of Blackheath pebble beds—remnants of a shallow sea from around 50 million years ago. This geological variety supports a diverse range of habitats: oak and hazel dominate the lower slopes, beech trees thrive on the mid-level sands, and the summit is home to heathland species like heather, bilberry, and wavy hair-grass. But it’s not just nature that makes Croham Hurst special. Archaeological finds show human activity dating back to the Mesolithic period (around 5000–3000 BC), including hut sites and flint tools. There’s even a Bronze Age round barrow at the top—a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It’s a place where geology, biodiversity, and deep history all come together. Walking is a great activity to help maintain health, both mentally and physically and walking through woodland or forest is a great way to help with this and also it is so relaxing. Try a walk and benefit from some Shinrin Yoku. The autumnal and fall times of the year are especially great with the fall colours of the trees to enjoy. It involves using all five senses and letting nature enter through those senses. Some examples of exercising this can include: Listening to forest sounds, i.e. birds and insects. Touching the ground, the trees, and the leaves. Smelling the flowers and other essential oils of the plants and trees. Observing the surroundings and scenery Tasting the crispiness of the air while breathing Reported health benefits Immune system booster Mental health and mood improvement Decrease in blood pressure and stress Many experiments have hypothesized the positive effects of shinrin yoku on the immune system It was shown that shinrin yoku was associated with increasing levels of natural killer cells, which are important in combating infection.
