THE PRIMARY PEACE ACTORS DEFEND THAT BUILDING PEACE AND SOCIAL COHESION IN MOZAMBIQUE MUST BE A COMMITMENT AND TASK FOR EVERYONE AND EACH ONE MUST DO IT WITH CONCRETE ACTIONS. “The construction of peace and social cohesion in Mozambique must be a task for everyone and each one must do it with concrete actions” – was one of the consensuses reached at the “1st Provincial Conference on Culture of Peace and Social Cohesion in Mozambique” in the province of Gaza organized by the Organization for the Promotion of Peace and Humanitarian Development (ORPHAD) and Forum for Peace and Social Cohesion in Mozambique, in partnership with FONGA (Gaza National NGOs Forum). The activity is part of the “Cycle of 10 Provincial Conferences for reflection on Building a Culture of Peace, Reconciliation, Social Cohesion and Development in Mozambique”. The well-attended Conference brought together senior figures from the province of Gaza, with emphasis on members of the government, civil society organizations, religious people, academies and community leaders from all districts of the province. The event, which aimed to decentralize or replicate the debate of the 2nd High-Level National Conference on Peace, Security and Development held in September 2023 in the city of Maputo, also served to (1) “Reflect on LOCAL Paths and Model for Building Peace, Security and Social Cohesion” in Mozambique; (2) “Reflect on lessons learned from the 2nd National High-Level Conference on Peace in 2023”; and (3) Create consensus for a National Society Agenda/Strategy to Support Peace efforts. By the end of the conference, the participants were unanimous in stating that there is a need to reinforce mechanisms to encourage young people as peace promoters and their rapprochement with the research community, the makers and implementers of peace policies and other key actors for a discussion constructive and awareness-raising to improve the participation of all stakeholders in the peace-building process from prevention, maintenance, consolidation of Peace and National Reconciliation, social cohesion and sustainable development.
