THEATRE HAYAL PERDESI PRESENTS THE THREE SISTERS by Anton Chekhov Adapted by Aleksandar Popovski A co -production with Istanbul Theatre Festival Waiting for ''The Three Sisters'' ''After all, what, in fact, is the difference between that which is and that which was?'' (A. P. Chekhov, ''The Three Sisters'') Three girls are waiting at the border. They want to leave the East and go to West like most people, in search of a better life. They’re fleeing from war and leaving deprivation and insecurity behind, perhaps even trying to run from themselves. While they are waiting to cross that imaginary line drawn on the world map many years ago, where, they think, some safer, more prosperous world is calling for them, lines from the Chekhov play come alive in the girls’ performance. As it turns out, the girls are actresses whose wish is to go to Berlin and find a safe place to rehearse Chekhov’s The Three Sisters. Eventually, Masha, Olga and Irina start to come alive in the vacuum between the two countries' borders, between the borders of two civilisations, in the space between the private and the theatrical, the documentary and the written word, the experienced and the imaginary. Their personal experiences mix with the biographies of the three sisters, so much so that it gets hard to tell whether the fire they are now talking about has recently happened in one of the war-torn Eastern countries, or it's the fire that struck the Russian provincial town in a play written many years ago. The similarities are many. Loneliness is still present as is the waiting. Migrants, refugees arriving Europe, people who make the same journey and wait, hope, and struggle get the chance to talk to Chekhov's characters, sharing with them words filled with anxiety and fragility, strength and dreams. After visiting the Edinburgh Fringe Festival consecutively for the second year, Theatre HHayal Perdesi presents an unconventional production of The Three Sisters, combining award-winning Macedonian director Aleksandar Popovski’s innovative stage direction with Sven Jonke’s modern stage design. The play features award-winning actresses Jale ARIKAN, Selin İŞCAN and Nisan ARIKAN “Together with these three young, but great artists Aleksandar Popovski creates an exceptionally heart-warming, competent, poor but wild theatre out of a story of great unhappiness.” Gilles Costaz (webtheatre.fr) “TurkishTheatre resists terror on the stage.” La Provence “Three Sisters is a magnificent play. Yet again, Theatre Hayal Perdesi comes up with an unprecedented work of art. Congragulations to Aleksandar Popovski! Make a note of the most ambitious production of the coming season.” Yaşam Kaya (Tiyatronline) “Aleksandar Popovski’s production of Three Sisters, premiered at the 20th Istanbul Theatre Festival, left me holding my breath. To say that I admired it would be an understatement – I am simply stunned by it.” Pınar Çekirge ( Tiyatro Tiyatro ) “It is a play about crossing borders of different kinds and sizes. The Three Sisters has already gone beyond the borders of Turkey, and come back with positive feedback from all the international festivals it appeared.” Funda Sarıcı (Ranini TV) THEATE HAYAL PERDESI Theatre Hayal Perdesi was founded by the actress Selin Iscan in Istanbul in 2013 to offer an alternative creative space for national and international troupes.
