You’re both from different musical cultures (UK and Germany), now living in Denmark—how do you feel these roots shape your sound, individually and together ? dan is from the UK, and chris is from Germany, and we met in Copenhagen in the winter of 2023. dan started going to parties in the UK in about 2015 when the whole hessle/livity sound/timedance/swamp81 thing had coalesced into what we think of as the second wave uk-techno scene, whereas chris was being exposed to the more linear, 4x4 centered sound of the 2010s, and in the search for more rhythmic diversity, he also found himself drawn towards the uk-scene. we both loved the amalgamation of influences that were being exhibited in the second wave of uk-techno at the time, but we wanted to link this to certain party experiences we’d had, which were those that you find for example in many major cities throughout Germany: dancefloors that are built around long parties and consistent groove. so when we eventually got round to writing our own stuff and starting playing outside of our bedrooms, this kind of broken, left-of-centre techno was the form we wanted the music to take. it both has the space for us to fill it with our influences, while also being music that is functional and groovey enough to keep a dancefloor going for an extended period of time. The Danish scene has been a big inspiration for me—what role has it played in your artistic evolution ? we’re immensely grateful to the scene in Copenahgen for the oppurtunities we’ve been given and the people we’ve been able to work with (special thanks go to Radio Panini, Jolene & the now closed Ikke Åben). Copenhagen as a city has alot of infrastructure in place for DIY projects, and in comparison to very over-saturated scenes like Berlin or London, there are alot of possibilities for starting a project from the ground up. with that being said, we started tactual because we didnt feel that there was any representation for our sound here in Copenhagen, nor a movement or scene which we really fit into. looking worldwide we also felt that this broken, uk-influenced techno sound was somewhat overlooked in the dance music landscape, so we wanted to try and carve out our own space. Your releases often lean towards bass and percussive techno, in contrast to the more trance and house-focused Copenhagen sound—where does this direction come from? What are your key inspirations, past and present ? on the one hand you have the second wave of uk-techno (early Timedance & Livity Sound, artists like Paleman and Forest Drive West), who were doing this broken and very uk-coded leftfield thing, and then on the other hand you have labels like Blueprint and Osgut Ton and artists like sleeparchive who were doing minimal, dusty and driving techno. both of our productions, as well as the label’s curation are attempts to coalesce these two sounds. aside from that we are both inspired by all different kinds of music really. dan finds inspiration in his love for jungle and hardcore, in the productions of Source Direct and old rave tapes of Ratty and Easygroove, but also from the scattered dub techno of artists like t++, Carrier and of course Basic Channel. chris finds inspiration in the stripped back but explorative techno coming from Speedy J/Jochem Paap on Electric Deluxe, Plastikman and Takaaki Itoh, aswell as more conceptual artists such as ø/Mika Vainio, or the catalogues of experimental labels like Editions Mego. all of these influences implicitly find their way into our productions and DJing. How would you describe the ethos or vision behind tactual ? tactual as a project is about engaging with dance music in a way that is heartfelt, genuine and personal. its about producing dance music culture that feels true to who we are. we try to put as much care as possible into every aspect of the label, and we want to make connections with people who care too.
