Our special WORLDSCHOOLING MOMENT: learning the process of making coffee, sugar cane and cocoa

Worldschooling moment for our whole family today. We all learned about the process of making coffee and cocoa. There are several local farms offering coffee tours in Monteverde, we picked Don Juan Coffee Tour. He was the first coffee producer in Monteverde around the 1980s. Back then that he started the first tour since often, people who visited asked about the process of the coffee from the plant to the final product. When you go on the tour, you visit the coffee plantations and the sugarcane plantations. However, there are no cocoa plantations in Monteverde because the weather is too cold to grow this fruit here. Therefore, Don Juan brings the cocoa from his plantation in Arenal. Consequently, the Chocolate part of the tour only references the production aspect of it but you still get to make chocolate, and you taste the cocoa fruit, although you don’t get to see its plantations. It was absolutely fascinating to learn the whole process, pick and hold the fruit, taste it, and then move on to the drying and roasting process until you finally get to taste the different types of coffee. Same for the cocoa, we had a chance to taste it raw, before sugar and spices were added to make it….tastier and sweeter! As for the sugar cane, we observed as our guide picked the sugar cane, cut it, and then together we squeezed the juice out of it! Cosimo also had a chance to bring the rest of it home with him and I can confirm he chewed it all!!! I’m the only coffee drinker in the family, however, we all love chocolate so it is still fascinating to learn of all the work that goes behind that product that we enjoy daily in our homes, after simply going to the store and buying it. It gives us a whole new appreciation of that product because we have a better understanding of the work behind it. The world is always teaching us something new!!!
