READ: After five long years of testing, the NextGen Acela is finally in revenue service carrying passengers. Join us as we hop onboard train 2154, the first NextGen departure from Washington, DC Union Station bound for Boston South Station with intermediate stops. To make a long story short, trainset 21 experienced door problems starting at BWI Airport which persisted throughout the run, eventually causing the crew to opt to manually open the doors on select cars via the emergency door latches. All in all, we incurred about a one-hour delay by the time the train arrived in the Boston area. Door problems aside, I found the ride quality on the new trains to be a substantial improvement over the original Acela sets. Any residual rough riding could be attributed to the track conditions on the NEC. The seats themselves were quite comfortable although the style of recline chosen (seat cushion sliding out instead of the seat-back actually reclining) left much to be desired. The lack of lumbar support when in the fully reclined position is bound to cause back problems in the long term. The seat cushions are also sprung towards the fully reclined position, and there were several seats where the cushion brakes were not calibrated correctly, causing them to slide forward into the fully reclined position even though the recline button on the arm-rest was not being pressed. This problem speaks to quality control issues at Alstom and could have been addressed by simply NOT springing the cushions one way or another and allowing the occupant to manually adjust the seat either forward or back when pressing the button. Overall, if the seat is functioning properly and can be kept in the fully upright position, I like them better than the current Amfleet seats. There are SOME rows onboard the train that either do not have full window access, or have no window at all. Those rows are the following: Car 1 (First Class): 1 and 3 Car 2 (Business Class): 5 (half) and 7 Cars 3-5 (Business): 1 (half), 3, 5, and 12 (half) Cars 7-8 (Business): 2 (half), 9, 11, 13 (half) Car 9 (Quiet Business): 5 (half), 7, 9 (half), 14, and 16 (half) It will probably be a learning curve for those looking to have window access on which rows to avoid. That being said, there are plenty of rows with unimpeded window access, so if you find yourself in a row that's next to a wall, you can simply go into the app and try to find a different seat to change into. Finally it is important to note that the NextGen Acelas are still awaiting full certification from the FRA, and are thus currently limited to the "B" speed profile (160 mph max with Northeast Regional curve speed restrictions) as opposed to the "A" speed profile (current gen Acelas with tilting active). Until such time that the NextGens receive full certification at 7 inches cant deficiency, overall travel times will not be reduced compared to the original Acela equipment. As a note, an issue with the rear power car's electrical circuit prevented us from reaching 160 mph in Massachusetts. I definitely still recommend trying out NextGen Acela and getting a feel for the new train, as it is still an overall improvement over the old equipment, but in short, temper your expectations.
