US-Russia Relations Discussion with the Russian Ambassador

The Center for the National Interest hosted an online webinar with Russian Ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, to discuss the current state of US-Russia relations on July 8th, 2020 via the Zoom platform. Russia is widely considered today to represent one of the main geopolitical and diplomatic challenges to the United States. While dialogue between the two countries continues, the relationship is increasingly defined by adversity, confrontation, and mistrust. Indeed, appearing recently on Russian television, Ambassador Antonov described the relationship as outright “horrible.” Still, as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has stated, both sides argue it is “really critical” to continue talking to each other. Ambassador Antonov addressed a wide variety of issues including: arms control agreements, the recent allegations of Russia paying bounties to Taliban members, and areas of potential US-Russia cooperation. Jacob Heilbrunn, editor of the National Interest, served as the moderator of this discussion.
