For the first time since 1952, the US has become a net energy exporter thanks to hydraulic fracturing. Canada too has this ability if we utilize our oil and natural gas reserves with fracturing, especially those found in Alberta. Canada has the third largest oil reserves in the world, with most reserves found in the oil sands. In 2020, Canadian oil and natural gas provided $105 billion to Canada’s GDP and supported more than 500,000 jobs in 2019. Oil sands help create prosperity across the country and invest billions of dollars into the Canadian economy. Additionally, Canadian natural gas is forecast to generate $250 billion to the economy over the next 10 years. A robust oil and natural gas industry will help reduce Canada’s deficit with new jobs, investments, and increased GDP. At current rates of consumption, Canada has enough natural gas to meet the country’s needs for 300 years, with enough remaining for export. With advanced safety measures in the oil and gas industry, it is time for us to continue to expand our use of hydraulic fracturing to benefit our country.
