Trump walks to church: President accused of gassing George Floyd protest for photo opp

Subscribe to the Evening Standard on YouTube:    / @thelondonstandard   Religious leaders have accused Donald Trump of using the church as "prop" after he posed for photos with a bible, moments after police used tear gas to disperse peaceful protesters from near the White House. Shortly after a speech in which he threatened to deploy military to end protests over the killing of George Floyd, Mr Trump on Monday walked from the executive mansion across the street to the nearby St. John’s Episcopal church, where he gathered a group of advisors for the photo op. Ahead of his journey to the church, police had appeared to deploy tear gas in an apparent bid to clear the streets. Footage shared on social media showed armoured-officers firing canisters of tear gas into crowds of demonstrators while they advanced on those protesting. Tear gas canisters could also be heard exploding in the background during Mr Trump's White House speech, in which he declared himself as the “president of law and order”.
