Inside the small room, everyone is trying to sleep under a worn-out quilt. The quilt is too small, not covering everyone properly, and the children are tossing and turning. Gradually, hushed whispers begin. Pinky 10: (Shivering, opening her eyes) Mommy, it's so cold, I can't sleep. Narration: Seema immediately turns towards her. Pinky's hands are ice cold. Chintu 8: (Shivering) Mommy, I feel a draft coming from somewhere. Mommy, please put something else over us. Narration: Seema herself is shivering from the cold, but hearing the children's voices, she quickly sits up. She finds a tattered shawl. It's frayed in places, with several holes, but without a word, she spreads the shawl and places it over the children. Seema 28: (Gently patting the children) There, children, this will keep you a little warmer. Just cuddle up together and sleep. Pinky 10: (Holding the shawl with both hands) Thanks, Mommy, it feels a little better now. Chintu 8: (Snuggling closer to his sister) Mommy, you should cover yourself too, you must be cold. Narration: Seema smiles faintly. Her fingers are turning blue from the cold, but she looks at the children and says. Seema 28: (Shivering) I'm not cold, you two sleep comfortably. Narration: While trying to get the children to sleep, Seema herself is shivering in the cold. She tries to keep herself warm by curling her legs up. The next morning, a strong, cold wind is blowing. Vinod, with a torn muffler wrapped around his head and his hands in his pockets, is returning home, his face downcast. Seema sees him and understands that he hasn't found work again today. Vinod 30: (In a tired voice) Seema, I went to five places today, but there's no work anywhere. Labor work has practically stopped in this cold weather. People don't come out of their houses; who will hire us? Narration: Seema becomes worried. Everyone is sitting inside, huddled under blankets. Mohan ji 40: (Speaking while coughing) Son, if I were well, I would help you, but this body doesn't allow me to do anything. Narration: Pain and helplessness are hidden in his voice. His illness worsens due to the cold. He clutches his chest while coughing. Vinod 30: (Stepping forward to support him) Father, you should rest, the cold is getting worse. Narration: The little money that was left in the house is slowly running out. In the afternoon, Seema comes out of the house and sweeps the courtyard. Her hands are numb from the cold wind. Three women from the neighboring house stop there, talking amongst themselves. They have woolen shawls in their hands, warm socks on their feet, and their eyes are constantly on Seema. First woman, Kamal 40: (Softly) Look, poor Seema's luck has run out, what a poor in-laws' house she's got. Everyone sleeps under the same blanket at night. Second woman, Vidhya 42: (Shaking her head) You're right, sister. They don't have decent clothes to wear or blankets to cover themselves with. I've been seeing for days how the children shiver in the cold. Third woman, Sarita 41: (Laughing) And this Seema will just keep sweeping and fetching water. In poverty, that's all you have to do day and night. Narration: The three women pass by Seema's house, but their words sting like arrows. Seema continues sweeping, but her eyes well up slightly. She bends down to try and hide her tears. Seema 28: (To herself) My family is going through so much trouble in this cold, but nobody sees that. But when it comes to taunting and gossiping, these women are always at the forefront. Nobody sees the pain, only the mockery and the mistakes. Narration: Seema pauses for a moment, takes a deep breath, wipes her eyes, and starts sweeping again. The next morning, the children go to school, the village's government school, with its dusty playground. The children are playing, wearing woolen sweaters, jackets, and caps. But Chintu and Pinky arrive at school hunched over, wearing thin, torn shirts and no sweaters. As soon as they reach the classroom door, some children burst into laughter upon seeing them. Vaibhav 10: (Laughing) Hey, look, they've come wearing torn clothes again today! Nikunj 9: (Taunting) Don't they have any new clothes at home? They must be very poor
