(16 Sep 2000) Natural Sound XFA Mexicans have begun celebrations to mark the 190th anniversary of the nation's independence. In Mexico City hundreds of soldiers lined up to begin their massive parade in Constitution Square. President Ernesto Zedillo watched the display, as the military band played to the marching soldiers. The celebrations, marking the 1810 uprising against Spanish colonial rule, are traditionally one of Mexico's most popular fiestas. The President started the day's celebrations at the National Palace in Dolores Hidalgo, which is three hours from the capital. There the President himself issued the "grito", the traditional re-enactment of the cry of independence first made on 16 September 1810. Tens of thousand of people watched him reenact the shout of independence that sparked Mexico's independence struggle. Across the country, families celebrated, with many watching the "grito" festivities on television. Alcohol has always been banned from the public Independence Day celebrations. But days before the festivities, officials in several Mexican cities - including the capital - announced they would remove the ban for the first time in 70 years.
