1990’s Sanyo Pedestal Stand Fan | Kipas Angin Berdiri Jadul

In 2024, I visited this hidden gem spot somewhere in Jakarta, at first just to look around, nothing serious. But then I actually found a real gem: this Sanyo 16” Pedestal Fan, model J16HFSK, from the late ‘80s or early ‘90s. It was literally sitting in the attic, still covered in its original plastic, surrounded by dust, junk, and humidity. It honestly felt like the fan was begging to be rescued. The crazy part is, stuff like this has no value to most people there, if it breaks, they just throw it away, even if it still in new condition. Luckily, all the parts were still there, complete and undamaged, except for the blade knob. The only real issue was how filthy it was; old, wet cardboard had stuck all over the base and body. I even started wondering what the original box and manual looked like. After a bit of negotiating, I ended up bringing this fan home, along with a few others, which I may or may not have reviewed already. Since then, I’ve been visiting that place more often and have basically become a regular customer. After spending a day or two cleaning it up, the fan started to shine again. exactly how it deserves. And I think today’s the perfect time to finally give it the spotlight. Design-wise, it still screams 80s style: dual voltage, a chrome or semi-chrome grill, and that deluxe plate design. Everything remains similar to earlier Sanyo models, except now it has the newer Sanyo logo, a white plastic badge, timer knob, and buttons, instead of chrome ones. This Sanyo also has a pretty unique electrical mechanism, similar to my National F-ES 402. The body is powered through the stand plug, while the plug itself comes from the base. But here’s the cool part, the Sanyo takes it a step further: instead of a fixed connector, it uses a 360° round port, so the fan body can just be plugged in any orientation and locked with a rear knob. It actually reminds me of those old Nokia chargers that also had a 360° plug. After testing it, I can confidently say... the throne of my National F-ES 402 has shifted. This Sanyo has officially become the most powerful 16” pedestal fan in my collection. Not only does it spin fast (and yeah, quite loud), but the airflow is overkill, seriously strong. Though personally, I prefer using it on speed 1 for a more elegant and comfortable breeze, especially for people sensitive to strong wind. As for durability, I believe this fan will last long, no doubt. But will it outlast a National? Hmm, not sure yet. I feel like old Sanyos are rarer, maybe because National was more aggressive in marketing back then. For now, I’ll keep this fan safely stored. Maybe one day, when I have a house with a rumah jengki/retro vibe like, this fan will fit right in hehehe.
