Complementing the previous video, "Barn fire - interior view" (and including a couple of short clips from it), this exterior video is of the same barn which burned on November 3, 2017. The primary purpose of the burn was demolition, as well as fire department training and research under real life fire conditions on the protection provided by drywall applied to large dimension wood structural members. There are four stages of fire development in a barn fire such as this one: Incipient - the stage where a fire begins. Growth - the fire increases in size and begins to influence the compartment's environment (in this example, the interior of the barn). Fully developed - the stage where all combustible materials in the compartment are burning at their peak heat release rate. Decay - the stage where the fire has consumed all of its available fuel (or oxygen) and the heat release rate begins to decline. This video begins with the fire early in its growth stage with large amounts of smoke but no visible flame yet 00:35. Fire was started in a small room along east wall of barn, simulating a typical barn fire scenario in which a minor fire begins unnoticed and grows undetected until it is too large to be easily extinguished. Sliding door on north wall was left open and this, combined with other openings in the barn, mean that fire had an adequate supply of air (oxygen) at all times making it a fuel-limited fire. Interior view at 00:55 at approximately the same time as exterior video shows increasing amount of smoke inside barn. At 01:23, thermal imaging camera aerial view shows how hottest areas of the barn are at top of building due to smoke and heated air rising. By 02:05 fire has breached exterior wall in room where it was started. Fire continues to grow exponentially as it generates more heat and a steady wind provides additional air. Fire is fully developed at 04:35 and becomes a much "cleaner" burn as more of the barn burns away, providing more ventilation. Radiant heat was felt at a considerable distance, hot enough that at 05:30 another videographer moved their "fuzzy microphone" and other equipment farther away. Portions of the barn begin to collapse at 06:00 as fire nears the decay stage due to majority of the available fuel being consumed. 07:18 Water is applied to wall of adjacent building for exposure protection to prevent radiant heat from the burning barn starting the nearby building on fire. Exposure protection like this is a common tactic in rural firefighting when the barn itself is too far gone to save and water supply is limited by the need to haul in water using tanker trucks. Complete collapse of remaining barn begins at around 08:35. "Real time" from ignition to collapse was about one hour, the remaining fire burned for several more hours to complete the demolition process. #fire #equineguelph #barnfire
