Mizoram, the lesser known North-Eastern state of India is inhabited by various tribes who practise a wide range of religious customs and cultural splendour. Blessed with a diverse range of geographical features, this small state brings excellent opportunities of travelling over the small hillocks with winding trails where one can get the adventurous feel of mountain biking. 2. By the time India gained independence from the British Empire, the number of tribal chiefs had increased to over 200. The educated elites among the Mizos campaigned against the tribal chiefdoms under the banner of the Mizo Union. As a result of their campaign, the hereditary rights of the 259 chiefs were abolished under the Assam-Lushai District ("Acquisition of Chief's Rights") Act, 1954. Village courts were re-implemented in the Mizo region along with other parts of Assam. All of these regions were frustrated by these arrangements and by centralised Assam governance. 3. About 95% of the current population is of diverse tribal origins who settled in the state, mostly from Southeast Asia, over waves of migration starting about the 16th century but mainly in the 18th century. This is the highest concentration of tribal people among all states of India, and they are currently protected under Indian constitution as a Scheduled Tribe. 4. Mizoram faces a unique problem of rats called 'Rat Floods'. At every 48 years, a particular species of bamboo flowers, after which the population of rats increase tremendously, enough to destroy entire villages, farmlands and farm yields. In 1959, Mizo Hills was devastated by a great famine known in Mizo history as 'Mautam'. The cause of the famine was attributed to flowering of bamboos which consequently resulted in rat population boom in large numbers. After eating up bamboos seeds, the rats turned towards crops and infested the huts and houses and became a plaque to the villages. The havoc created by the rats was terrible and very little of the grain was harvested. For sustenance, many Mizos had to collect roots and leaves from the jungles while a considerable number died of starvation. 5. Mizoram is one of three states of India with a Christian majority (87%). Its people belong to various denominations, mostly Presbyterian in the north and Baptists in the south. 8.5% are Buddhists. 6. Baktawng Tlangnuam is a remote mountainous village of Mizoram and it is in news from many years. Tens of thousands of tourists from all over the world visit this tiny hamlet to catch a glimpse of Ziona Chana family. Ziona Chana is the head of a local Christian religious sect 'Chana' (which allows polygamy) who has 39 wives, more than 90 children and 33 grand children. To your surprise, it is the biggest family in the world and they all live under one roof. They all live in a four-storey building which is named as Chhuanthar Run (CTR) and it consists 100 rooms. They all live in different rooms but shares the kitchen and work. Now, the CTR became one of most crowded tourist spots in the state. 7. Aizawl is the capital of the state of Mizoram in India. With a population of 293,416,[3] it is the largest city in the state.
