At Cluan Homestead, south of Westbury, James and Lucy Peddie are building on a legacy while reshaping the future of their farm. Their 800-hectare prime lamb and wool operation, supported by the nearby 320-hectare West Ham property, runs 10,000 adult ewes and up to 17,000 lambs each year. But productivity isn’t their only focus. Overcoming long-standing challenges like gorse and willow, they have renovated more than 90% of their pastures and seen remarkable natural regeneration along Swamp Gum Rivulet and Buffalo Creek. With support from the Tamar Action Grants, the Peddies have: ✅ 16 troughs across the property ✅ Completed 25 km of new fencing ✅ Protected more than 5 hectares of riparian zone ✅ Strengthened biodiversity through reconnecting pockets of remnant vegetation Removing stock from waterways has created living corridors, encouraged paperbark regeneration, and supported healthier pastures, better lamb survival, and improved weight gains. These on-farm changes also reduce pathogens and improve water quality, benefits that extend far beyond the farm and into the Kanamaluka / Tamar estuary. For James, this work is about legacy: “No one will remember how many lambs you’ve produced or any of those sorts of things… but those trees will still be here when I’m dust.” 💚 Get Involved Every property plays a vital part in the health of the catchment. Whether you’re a landholder, community member, business, or visitor, your support helps ensure a cleaner, healthier estuary.
