Three-point lighting is a classic portrait lighting set-up for both stills and video work. As the name suggests, you’ll need three lights! After experimenting, you'll learn that there are plenty of ways to use 3-point lighting. Photographer Gavin Hoey introduces a step-by-step guide for this essential lighting technique. First, he starts with a one-flash portrait in his small home studio. Once that is set, Gavin adds a hair light to create a rim light on one side of his model. Finally, he adds a third light to complete the three-light portrait. As Gavin demonstrates, the third light can be placed either behind your subject as a background light. However, if you’re after a soft, evenly lit portrait technique, place the third light in front of your subject. Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic.
