Peter Stuyvesant was the last Director-General of the Dutch colony of New Netherland, before it was ceded to the English and renamed New York. He was born in the Dutch province of Friesland and came to America in 1647, after being appointed Director-General of New Netherland by the Dutch Republic. He lived on the island of Manhattan, where the Dutch city of New Amsterdam was rapidly growing on its southern tip. On September 6, 1664 Stuyvesant ordered the surrender to the English and they renamed the colony and city New York. The English allowed all colonial residents to stay, and Stuyvesant spent the remainder of his life on his farm, called the Great Bowery or Stuyvesant Farm. It was located outside the then city, on 62 acres, in what is now the East Village. Peter Stuyvesant died on his farm in August 1672, and his body was entombed in the east wall of St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, which you see in this video.
