Anna Szałucka and Monika Mašanauskaitė perform Steve's Reich "Piano Phase" as a music installation at the Mo Museum in Vilnius, Lithuania. It's our mission to connect people with the magic of music and spacetime🎹🎹 If you'd like to support us, be a part of the change and help us make music accessible for everyone, please go to: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pianophase www.szaluckapiano.com www.Monika pianists.com We're grateful to all our supporters 💗 Fore more info please visit www.monikapianiste.com/piano-phase-project About us: Our ultimate goal is creating musical installations in contemporary settings where two pianists perform together, giving the audience an insight into the new format of classical music concerts. We give the visitors opportunity to join in as they wish. This liberal and democratic presentation of the music allows listeners to freely move around the space and experience a classical music concert in a completely new environment and fresh, forward-thinking approach. We welcome everyone - no matter your age or personal background. We started our journey with a minimalist composition for two pianos called "Piano Phase", written by American composer Steve Reich. The typical performance lasts around 20 minutes and is played without any breaks creating a meditative, relaxing atmosphere. We've already performed this installation in two biggest Lithuanian cities: Vilnius (MO Museum) and Kaunas (for the opening of Kaunas European Capital of Culture). But we're not stopping here! Be a part of the change and help us bring this project further - around Europe and around the world. Together we can redefine making music and bring it closer to the people. We like to think of ourselves as artists not only musicians, therefore we collaborate with dancers, visual artists, activists, podcasters and broader media. We want to spread the message and talk about issues important for us: inclusivity, perception of music, education for children and adults alike as well as artists' lives. To make the installation more affordable we decided to perform on upright pianos, because why not? (We think it looks cool too :)). Other costs include travel, rehearsing, collaborating with artists and composers and most importantly - making it FREE for the audience. Be a change. Make a change. And be a part of some great installations! About Steve Reich and his work: The work performed in the video is a minimalist composition for two pianos called "Piano Phase", written by American composer Steve Reich. It was created in 1967 and since then the world has heard only a few performances of this extraordinary piece of music. The typical performance last around 15 to 20 minutes and is played without any breaks creating a meditative atmosphere. In his essay from 1968, Reich described his interest in using active processes to generate music and studying its influence on the audience. Piano Phase is an example of music as a gradual process - the same music material (the same notes) are organised in different patterns, interchanging and evolving as the work develops. These superimpositions form sub-melodies, often spontaneously due to echo, resonance, dynamics, and tempo creating a meditative environment and introducing ambient quality into the performance space. According to musicologists, Piano Phase led to several breakthroughs both for Reich's future compositions and the perception of contemporary music in the world. To experience a musical performance of that nature helps us understand the world around us and ourselves, and challenges us to think in new ways.
