On Saturday morning, a team from the Coimbatore city police arrested four well-known rowdies after a public chase on the outskirts of Bengaluru. One of the arrested men had recorded a video while trying to escape from the police and shared it with his advocate, family members, and friends. According to police sources, a notorious rowdy named Gokul, 24, from Lakshmi Garden in Kondayampalayam on the outskirts of Coimbatore, was hacked to death near the combined court complex on February 13, 2023. The police arrested the murderers, and two of them were shot in the legs while attempting to escape from police custody. Preliminary investigations revealed that two gangs were operating in Rathinapuri and Kannappa Nagar in Coimbatore city and were involved in murders. One gang was led by Ondra Gowtham and the other by Kamarajapuram Gowtham. V Sriram, 22, of Sampath Street in Rathinapuri, was a member of the gang led by Ondra Gowtham. He had posted a video on his Instagram page challenging the rival gang to finish him off if they could when he ventured out to Anjugam Nagar near Chinnavedampatti. He was hacked to death by the rival gang on December 20, 2021. The Saravanampatti police arrested Kamarajpuram Gowtham's close aide Suji Mohan and a few more youths for murdering Sriram. Supporters of Ondra Gowtham decided to take revenge on the murder of Sriram by killing Gokul in full public view near the combined court complex in February 2023. Following the rivalry murders, the city police discovered that the two gangs were active on Instagram, which was fueling their rivalry. The Coimbatore city police commissioner V Balakrishnan and deputy commissioner of police G Chandeesh took stringent action against the rowdies. They formed an anti-rowdyism team led by assistant commissioner of police T H Ganesh and inspector Rajkumar. The police arrested over 80 people belonging to both gangs for their involvement in posting videos with deadly weapons on Instagram and supplying ganja. The police team discovered that the friends of Gokul were planning to take revenge for his murder, and they traced their whereabouts to a flat on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The anti-rowdyism team rushed to Bengaluru on Friday and arrested four youths named J Suji Mohan, 29, and R Praveenraj, 25, of Rathinapuri, and V Amarnath, 23, and C Prasanth, 25, of Ganapathy in Coimbatore city, who were hiding in the flat. On seeing the police team, the four men, who were part of Kamarajapuram Gowtham's gang, tried to escape, but the police chased and arrested Suji Mohan and Praveenraj. The remaining two youths ran for at least four km, and the special team chased and arrested them. Amarnath recorded a video on his mobile and shared it with his family members and friends, saying that a police team was chasing him and his hands and legs were normal. He expressed his uncertainty about what the police might do to them and asked his friends to share the video to help them. #bengaluru #coimbtoregangwar #instagram Subscribe to The Times of India's YouTube channel: http://goo.gl/WgIatu For daily news & updates and exclusive stories, follow the Times of India Facebook: / timesofindia Instagram: / timesofindia Download the app: http://toi.in/3SLUCa80 Follow TOI+ for well-researched and in-depth news and analysis Facebook: / timesofindiaplus Twitter: / toiplus Instagram: / toi_plus
