Partitioning is a method used with the kids to help them with learning addition. This method is all about using place value; the hundreds, tens and units, so it is always important to make sure that your child is secure with place value before they come to the point of using this strategy. When parents come to the part of teaching this strategy to their kids at home, there is one important thing which they are supposed to pay close attention to, which is the fact that kids are not supposed to write the steps of it down - although it would be acceptable at the beginning when they are still learning it all - but instead they will need to learn to do the steps and keep it all in their heads. How to make adding easier for kids? Partitioning the numbers, segmenting or breaking them into hundreds, tens and units is actually one of the best ways that kids could follow in order to make addition much easier for them. All what they will need to do is break the numbers they have in their heads and then move forward with doing the addition thing. When the kids come to the part of partitioning, they manage to reach the point of "like for like" and this means that they will add the tens together and the units together, which is always easier because when they add the tens they will have zeros in the equation and thus will manage to calculate it all in an easier way in their minds. Here is one example for this, if the equation is 36 + 22, the kids will partition 36 into 30 + 6 and 22 into 20 + 2 and thus they will then add the tens together to become 30 + 20 which they already know that it would be 50 and add the units together which will bring 6 + 2 equals 8 and which the kid could easily count on his/her fingers ( • Counting to 10 for Pre-schoolers and Kinde... ), and eventually they will add the 50 and the 8 to bring them the final answer to the first equation which is 36 + 22 = 58. To teach partitioning to your child, we have to mention the steps which you will need to go through one more time and which are: partitioning the numbers, placing the tens numbers together and the units numbers together, and the final step is calculating and recombining the final answer. Parents already know what partitioning is but not all the kids are familiar with this strategy and that's why parents should try it several times with their kids before they leave the whole equation for the kids to solve. Allow the kids to do these different steps while writing them first before you could move on with it all to the other part which is teaching them to do it in their heads and bring out the final answer on paper. Talk through these different steps of the strategy with your child, make sure that they have secure understanding of what these different steps are and what they mean, and let the kids feel free to start doing the strategy in the written form before they progress into the written strategy. Partitioning and the way it is used in teaching the kids addition is one of the most famous strategies used with the children that helps in making addition appear much easier for the kids and give them the chance to learn how to do the calculations in their heads without the need to write them all down on paper. Teaching kids addition could happen through other methods and games, like Lego and magnetic numbers ( • Lego Number Games | Counting Games | Count... ), play doh ( • Play Doh | Basic Subtraction Games for Kid... ) and even using the monster characters and the other small toys which the kids own, which all turn the whole lesson into a more fun, interactive and exciting game. Partitioning strategy in addition for kids is one of the most famous strategies used, so never underestimate it and teach it to your kids. ---------- LearningMole focuses on educating children of all ages.
